The Video Games Newscast – January 2016

Hi guys and welcome to an IM PLAYIN Newscast, a wrap up of January 2016, covering our top news highlights from across the gaming industry.

First up we got a whole host of Destiny news. For starters we got a new Iron banner event where you had the chance to unlock some class items and a new fusion rifle. On top of that Bungie announced that the Crimson days update would transform he tower into a red love nest this Valentines day bringing with it new items and a brand new game mode, crimson doubles.

Crimson doubles consists of teams of two battling it out in the crucible, matchmaking is disabled for this game mode so make sure to hook up with a buddy if you want to take part.

In wider Destiny news it was announced that Destiny 2 would be delayed until 2017, the game was originally supposed to be released later in the year. However don’t despair to much fellow fans as the studio head did say that they are looking to launch new Taken King style DLC this year instead.

Perhaps related to the announcement of the delay, Bungie’s CEO Harold Ryan stepped down as the head of the studio and Pete Parsons the former COO stepped in to fill the position. Parsons said – “To the players of Destiny, I want you to know that my number one priority, and Bungie’s, is and always has been to deliver great games that we can all share together. I believe that Destiny is a one-of-a-kind experience. I also believe you have yet to see our studio’s best work. My new role here at the studio will be entirely focused on fulfilling that promise.” We will have to see what’s the best bungie can offer.

In other news, The Division beta was a big talking point this January with many of you rampaging around Manhattan to see what the game is all about. However the PC version of the game ran without any form of anti-cheat or server-side checks for the majority of its values and statistics. This lead to players running through walls, having unlimited ammo or even turning invisible. Ubisoft’s response so far has been to claim that glitch abuse is causing these problems, rather than actual hacks or cheats. One thing is for sure the guys at Massive will be working hard to make sure this sort of thing doesn’t happen when the game launches later in the year.

Back to PC and EA announced that they are bringing the EA access to the PC under the new name Origin Access, this of course ties into their existing origin service. You will be able to pay a monthly fee to have access to EA’s back catalog of games, just like you can on the console. As well as access to these games, you will also receive a discount on the origins store. But perhaps the best thing about this was their commercial featuring Bill Nye, man I could watch him all day.

And finally for fans of men running around in overalls pointing weird sic fi weapons around are in luck. It was announced that a new Ghostbusters game is in the works and will launch on the PS4 and Xbox One in July alongside the film. This may signal the warming signs of a crappy tie in-game but with titles such as Batman Arkham Knight and Mad Max paving the way for truly great movie inspired games there may be hope yet.
