Hello everyone! My name’s Jonathan, and I’m happy to say that I’ve been given the opportunity to do some writing for IM PLAYIN! This makes me very happy, because my dream job is to write for the gaming industry. I’m actually in college right now working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in English for that very purpose. However, when I’m not in class, doing homework, or working at one of my two jobs, you can find me glued to my laptop or PS3, gaming it up.
To me, video games are more than just an escape from reality, or a good way to spend time with your friends (not that there’s anything wrong with that). It’s also a way of telling a story in a unique and interactive way that movies and books simply can’t, and that’s the reason that I chose to pursue a career in writing for the industry. I would love nothing more than to see something I’ve written come to life in a video game. That’s just a fantastic thought!
But enough about my aspirations as a writer, let’s talk about games! I love playing just about anything. RPGs, FPS, action/adventure… I enjoy them all as long as the game is of high quality in graphics, sound, and most importantly, story. I tend to lean more toward RPGs for the most part, but I love playing some League of Legends or Halo with friends. I love a challenge, and I love collecting trophies/achievements (I don’t consider a game completely beaten until I’ve obtained every one of them!). Unfortunately, I can’t get high speed internet where I currently live, so I’m not able to play games online, which breaks my heart every day, but luckily there are plenty of awesome single player experiences out there to enjoy! As to which systems I prefer, I’ve yet to come across a gaming platform that I didn’t like. I’m one of those guys who would always buy all of the next gen systems as they came out if I could afford it. Right now though, all I have is my laptop, my old and faithful PlayStation 2, and my beloved PlayStation 3. I had a 360 at one point, but it fell victim to the red ring of death, and I haven’t bothered to get another one yet.
My selection of favorite games has changed a lot over the last couple years, but lately they’ve stayed the same. At the bottom of my selection of favorites is the Kingdom Hearts series. I absolutely love the strong RPG elements mixed in with the action based gameplay. And let’s be honest; who doesn’t love the idea of incorporating Disney and Final Fantasy characters into a game and watching them interact with each other? Next would have to be the Bioshock series. I’m a sucker for a dark setting and, as you know, an intriguing story to keep me hooked. I’m going to exclude Bioshock 2 from here, because sometimes I really wish that game never happened. Finally, but most importantly, is the Souls games. In 2011 I discovered the fantastic experience that was Demon’s Souls, and the rest is history; death filled history. No series does exploration better, nor is there one with a better risk/reward system.
Finally, I would like to mention a couple of my favorite moments in gaming, so you guys can get a better idea of what kind of gamer I am. If you’ve had enough of my egotistical article, then please feel free to stop! You won’t hurt my feelings, I promise. Anyways, my go to response for this kind of question is typically my epic battle with Dragonslayer Ornstein and Executioner Smaug in Dark Souls. This is an infamous boss battle that most Dark Souls fans will no doubt have foul words for. You walk into a large cathedral to see a ten foot rotund behemoth with a hammer, and a 7 foot guy who’s known for SLAYING DRAGONS. Needless to say, this is a tough one. For all its frustrations though, it’s beautifully balanced. Smaug is slow, but has insanely large swings, while Ornstein zips across the room thrusting his spear in your face. Even with the help of an NPC, I must have died a couple dozen times trying to defeat the dynamic duo. My moment came, however, when I got fed up one day, and didn’t even summon help. I just ran passed all the enemies between me and that fog gate, and I hopped through like I owned the place. After about 5 minutes, I finally took down Ornstein, and then another 15 minutes later, Smaug toppled as well. My victory was sweet, and my prize sweeter as I could now teleport around the land of Lordran. I will probably never feel so awesome in a video game ever again.
Well, that’s about all I can think of as an introduction! Hopefully we have some gamer qualities in common, and you will find my articles both profound and entertaining. Just a heads up, I like to make lists and I really like to write articles about what I’m playing, especially if I feel I can help out fellow gamers in their quest for glory! Thanks for reading.
