Finally Playing The Last Of Us – Opinions Of An Xbox Gamer

The last Sony console that I owned was the PS2. It was a fantastic console, and I absolutely loved playing it. Still, when I had to choose between the Xbox 360 and the PS3, I decided to go for a change, rather than stick with what I knew. There wasn’t anything in particular that made me change company – other than that the Xbox 360 was a bit cheaper, and my parents were more likely to buy that console for me than they were the PS3. When it comes to my decision, I only have one or two regrets about choosing the Xbox 360 – and those regrets are not getting to play The Last of Us or inFamous. Other than that, I have no regrets about choosing the Xbox 360 over the PS3. So far, now that I own an Xbox One and not the PS4, my regrets are pretty much the exact same. But, thankfully, I now have the chance to appease those regrets, because my brother purchased a PS4, with both inFamous Second Son and, you guessed it, The Last of Us!

The good thing about having a sibling is that, if you get along, you’re able to share your things. In my case, I’ll let him play my games and he’ll let me play his, so the second that I found an opening, I booted up The Last of Us on his PS4. I had waited well over a year to get my hands on that game, and I’m really glad that the first time I was able to play it, I was able to do so on the more powerful PS4. Graphics, sound and gameplay aside, the remastered version isn’t leaps and bounds away from the original – which is a good thing. The Last of Us was an absolute force in 2013, so there was no need to fix something that isn’t broken. The little tweaks just helped to give it a little polish, and smooth out any rough edges – which were few and far between.

So, what did I think of my first experience of ‘The Last of Us?’. One word – sensational. From the second that the game opened, I was absolutely captivated by it. The story instantly drew me in, creating a whole range of emotions within me. Mostly fear, and an awful lot of sadness. For a few minutes after the prologue, the game does slow down a little – just so that you can learn the ropes. But, once you’ve picked up the basic skills you’ll need for survival, you’re thrown straight back into the rich, tense and terrifying world that is post-apocalyptic America. I’ve not played a huge amount of the game so far, but I am a couple of hours in. From what I’ve already played, I can tell that this is a game I’ll be enjoying for some time to come.

After playing just a few hours, I can already see that I was right to be so jealous of PS3 gamers when the original was first released. The hype surrounding the game was more than justified and, to be honest, I don’t think that there was an Xbox 360 exclusive that can compare to The Last of Us. Of course, that’s just my opinion – I’m sure that there are plenty of people who would prefer to play Halo. But, I’m a zombie/apocalypse fan, through and through, so The Last of Us really is my kind of game.

I was planning on getting a PS4 at some point, anyway. But, after playing The Last of Us on my brother’s console, it’s made me realise that ‘at some point’ really needs to be a lot sooner than I first planned. It’s getting to the point now where there are a lot of great games coming to both consoles, and I don’t want to have a repeat of the last generation; when I look at the gameplay videos of games like Bloodborn, The Order or No Man’s Sky and wish that I had a PS4 of my own to play them on. Looks like 2015 is going to be an expensive year.

glad you liked it. it’s one of my all time favorites 🙂 and there’s a rumor that TLOU 2 is in the making so buying a PS4 for me is inevitable at this point

    • I’m loving every second so far, and I can only see it getting better. I’d imagine that i’ll have a PS4 by the time the sequel is released!

the last chapter will blow your mind out of the water,

I read that the prologue wasn’t in there at first. It’s something they decided to go back and do after fairly long I to development. If so I’m glad they did.

is it possible, an xbox owner, that isn’t arrogant, delusional, liar, offensive, blind, indoctrinated, always fighting on forums, bashing anything from sony, death-impregnate threatening girls playing online, idiot, immature, patriotic, with only one thing in mind: making sony games and gamers look bad, and make the xbox brand-console-games look phenomenal. is it possible ?

and then, i checked your website url, and i understood why it is possible…

the last of us is fantastic. if they make a TLOU 2, it’s gonna be game of the decade. get yourself your ps4, great games available, and tons of new ones to come, in 2015, when the floodgates are open, 24 hours won’t be enough, for a gamer. and if you get a ps+, don’t forget add to your download queue ALL the ps vita and ps3 free stuff. if you grab a ps3, one day, you will have hundreds of games for free, just waiting for being download and played.

        happy TLOU gaming.

          • Broken Halo

I can understand your point, however something very ominous is going on in Xbox land lately. If you go on YouTube or anyplace there are videos of PS4 exclusives you’ll see tons of comments from Xbox fans trying to downplay the games. I rarely see Microsoft games being downplayed by Sony fans. Simply look up The Order, Uncharted 4, Drive Club or Blood Bourne on YouTube. I can only assume either MS has a team hired to do this or they have some of the most insecure, ravenous, delusional fans of all time.

i own a XB1 and previously i had a ps3 and xbox 360, the only thing that annoys me about ps4 gamers is the constant graphics talk but as far as gaming goes i love both consoles, there are pros and cons to both. Just enjoy gaming i say whether your on xbox or ps.

im on xbox one and was on 360 but i love watching this game on twitch, i so want to play this game that im buying a ps4 in january sales just for this game. Also because im hoping that a new socom and MAG 2 comes out at some point.

    • PhantomVash808

You do know the developers behind Socom and Mag shut down right.

      • import69

yes i know that but socom is a big exclusive for sony and im sure it wont be too long before we see a new one, also the guy that made Mag is trying to raise the funds to make a Mag 2 from what rumours say, whether its true or not i dont know but one can only hope.

        • PhantomVash808

I don’t know about another Mag type game but I know many of the developers that created Mag and Socom are working on a Socom like game called H Hour. If you want to play a massive online shooter on PS4 be on the look out for Planetside 2 coming early 2015.

Was the first Single Player campaign that would keep me up WAY past my bed time. When I could tell I was getting near the end I was taking my time. To call it a game almost diminishes it.

    • Two games are currently doing that for me, The Last of Us (Obviously, whenever I have the time to play on my bro’s PS4) and Dragon Age: Inquisition

Not only my favorite game of 2013, but damn close to my favorite game ever, I’ve always been a multi console owner because I refuse to miss out on exclusives like this when they come by. TLOU is a perfect blend of actual acting (the cast does a wonderful job), graphics, story and even replay value…I finished it 8 times on ps3 alone, then another 2 or 3 on ps4. It’s a game no one should miss. I’m sure…and I’ve seen people hate hard on this game and the reasons are always unfounded. Glad you got to play such a masterpiece. Better late than never=) enjoy the rest.

    • Thanks! It’s a shame that games consoles are so expensive, because otherwise I’d have every console, PC and handheld out there. And the Rift, obviously.

TLOU and MGS1 are the two best games I’ve ever played on any PlayStation console. You’d be wise to just get both consoles as anyone would be because if you don’t you’re sure to miss out on some top quality exclusive games. Oh and the online MP is underrated so give it a go it’s pretty damn addictive. Also make sure you get Uncharted you really missed out there dude big time.

It was a very good game, and I enjoyed it quite a bit the first time I played it, I would have given it about an 8.5 or so. The only issue I have with the game is how over-hyped it is, it’s great, but blown way out of proportion…not actually the games fault, but still. The game had great voice acting, and the story was great until the end, where it kinda took a dive, and for me the MP was a complete waste. The gameplay was good for the type of game that it is, but it was nothing spectacular or groundbreaking.

I understand Uncharted is not the same as the last of us, but why not regret that one? Has the same naughty dog charm.

    • The main reason that I regret missing TLOU is mainly down to the fact that A) it won so many awards for being such a great game, like I was missing out B) because TOLU is pretty much the type of ‘zombie’ game I always wanted to play, and it always tore me up that I never got the chance to play it – there’s just no equivalent. Uncharted, however, whilst it seems like a good game, just doesn’t appeal to me in the same way. I’m sure my brother will get the next uncharted game on the PS4, and when he does I’ll definitely play it!

      • JonathanCoit

Uncharted 2 one a large number of Game of the Year awards and is only a few points lower than TLOU on Metacritic, and the sequel is much more of the same thing with bigger cinematic moments. If you like the cinematic style of storytelling and gameplay and beliable characters with heart I’d really suggest checking them out. They’re basically pulp Indiana Jones movies on crack.

Owning a PS3 for around 6 years, there’s only been a few games that have lived up to the hype. The Last of Us, Uncharted, God of War 3, GTA 5, PGR 3, Dirt 2 and Red Dead Redemption are probably the only ones to mention (maybe a few others). Other games have been decent. Out of them all, The Last of Us is a game that very rarely comes along. On the Xbox 360, it was Gears of War. Like The Last of Us, it came from nowhere. Way too many times do games get AAA status. With every gen, not many AAA games come along. I’ve major doubts about The Order and Uncharted 4. But even so, it’s The Last of Us 2 which will be the most eagerly awaited game this gen. You’d be lucky to see a handful of AAA games for the Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U.

Glad that you finally got to play it. Halo has always been the 1 game on the Xbox that i wish I could play on my PS systems, so I’m like the opposite of you. The Last of Us however really changed my game taste. I was used to quicker, faster paced games, where I was basically a killing machine. This game made me a weakling and I was skeptical at first of the slower style. But that style really helped you fall into the world of the game and being weak really scared me in the game. No longer did I run into battle guns blazing, and a few times my heart even skipped a beat out of shocking fear. This game was different, in a good way, and as you progress, you encounter some situations where you’ll just look at it and say “there’s no way they expect me to survive this”. Good luck. Great game.

I really liked it a lot, but funny enough I was playing Spec Ops – The Line at roughly the same time and I almost enjoyed it more. I think maybe it’s because this game was so incredibly hyped and I didn’t expect anything from Spec Ops that skewed my experience a bit. Regardless, it’s still a very good game.
And to anybody that didn’t play Spec Ops, do yourself a favour and try it. You may be just as pleasantly surprised as I was.
