E3 2015 – Sony’s Top 5 Announcements

As we once again get our breath back from the Sony conference at E3 2015, we are given the opportunity to lay it all out on the table and pick our top 5 announcements. Amazingly, games such as The Last Guardian, Dreams and even Uncharted 4 didn’t make it onto our list, showing how strong a conference Sony gave us. So here is our countdown to the top 5 announcements of Sony’s 2015 E3 conference.

5. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Starting off the list is the game that has got me most excited so far this E3. Coming from Guerrilla, the studio that brought you Killzone, Horizon looks like the sort of game you could get lost in forever. Set in a post apocalyptic world where humanity lives in tribes and the world has been inhabited by robots, and seemingly robot dinosaurs! In the short snippet that we got to see, the character models on both the main character and the robots looked stunningly detailed and the combat looks powerful and easy to get to grips with. The environment and textures looked spectacular and I wanted to dive in and play right away.

4. Morpheus Multiplayer

Although I felt that it was a weak showing of Morpheus this E3, they did mention a few tid bits that raised my eyebrows. One of these was multiplayer coming to Morpheus, and I think that shows real direction. While I’m sure that VR headsets have the potential to be huge for solo play, the real fun will come from getting together with your mates to try it out, so this just seemed perfect.

3. No Man’s Sky Demo

It’s a project that people thought was too ambitious for a small studio, and from seeing the demo that statement just seems more and more true. Showing off one of the first demos of No Man’s Sky, Hello Games painted a picture of the largest galaxy you have ever seen in a video game universe. The amount of explorable solar systems started to make my nose bleed as I though about all the travel between them. Throw in random battles, millions of worlds to explore and the hype just keeps climbing!

2. Final Fantasy 7 Remake

They announced a Final Fantasy 7 remake… Enough Said. Seriously though, we only saw a cinematic here but we all know the score. The public have been asking for this since the dawn of time, or as long as we didn’t have FF7 on a current gen console, and Square have finally given us an answer. This literally broke the internet for a few minutes as amazed gamers hunted to see if this was true or another cruel joke.

1. PlayStation & Activation Partnership

While it may not be the most exciting news for many fans, out of everything announced it’s the one thing I found to be the most significant. For the last few years Call of Duty and Xbox have been firmly entrenched together to the point that you almost associate Call of Duty with Xbox, whenever it is mentioned. Significantly, Sony announced that they have a new partnership with Activision. This means that PS4 owners, not Xbox owners will be the first to get access to beta programs and will be the first to get the DLC packs that come with the COD games. Call of Duty has a new home on the PS4 and as a win for Sony, that’s pretty huge!

so you think the one sentence they said about morpheus was more important than showing Last Guardian/FF7/Shenmue 3???

Not The Last Guardian? What the…

    • Ha, I know. It was hard to choose between so many things. The Last Guardian has been shown for so long that I felt it was expected to much to be a top announcement.

    Mine were:
FFVII Remake (this is where my gamertag FantasyMeister originated)
    Horizon Zero Dawn (Machine Hunter-esque)
No Man’s Sky (Learned a lot more about what you can do on each planet)
Firewatch (First time I’ve seen it, looked very fresh and original)
Uncharted Collection (I went XBox 360 to PS4 so missed out on a few PS3 gems)
    And that was it really.

TLG has never really been my cup of tea, I wasn’t a big fan of ICO or that other one where you run about bringing down titans by climbing on them. I never completed Shenmue I or II on the Dreamcast although I still have both and might revisit one day, but neither grabbed me instantly and got me hooked.

Both of these were HUGE announcements though, pure fan service and totally #4theplayers, so I’m happy to give both honorable mentions even though they’re not in my personal top 5 🙂

    • Totally agree, everything people are mentioning here could have made the list. Firewatch looks amazing but I think Horizon was my game of the show.

What I wanna know is when will Sony FINALLY announce digital PS1 classics cross buy/play support on PS4?

Digital PS1 classics are cross buy/play on PS3, Vita, and PSP, literally every PlayStation system that can connect to PSN EXCEPT the newest most powerful PS4. Why? So they can charge us again to RENT them when they bring PS1 classics to PS Now???

After Microsofts huge backwards compatibility announcement, now seems like a REALLY good time to finally announce this..

    • It seems such a missed opportunity. Xbox won big when they announced backwards compatibility. All Sony have to do it say “oh and by the way, you can now play PS1 & PS2 classics on PS4” and they would get the momentum right back.

Exactly! Glad I’m not the only one who sees this. Really hope they eventually do. I was hoping long time for USB video/media support and DLNA on PS4 and that pleasantly came true few days ago. Here’s hoping…

        • You never know, they may be saving it for a rainy day. PS4 sales are doing well at the moment so they need to keep something back to ensure that doesn’t fall down.

  • So I was close to adding The Last Guardian but its been rumoured and shown for so long now that it doesn’t feel like a big deal. I expect that game to come out or be completely canned so while it was very exciting to see, new prospects got my interest more. Don’t get me wrong, it looks great!

As for Shenmue 3, it again was a close one, it came down to what I wanted to see more of. Im not a huge fan of the Shenmue series so there is an element of personal excitement here rather than objective fan favorite. Im sure its one 90% of people lists though!
