Could Call of Duty Be Trying To Emulate Elements Of Evolve?

Call of Duty’s zombie mode has been a big part of my gaming life. When it first came out, and in the couple of games after it, I was absolutely addicted to the game mode. Of late, however, I’ve become a little disinterested in the game mode. It’s mainly because I’ve slowly become disillusioned with the game series as a whole, but it’s also because the game mode itself seems to be getting increasingly ridiculous. What was once a simple round survival game has now become an insane race to activate levers and traps, unlock areas of the map and hold off against increasingly difficult enemies. And, with the trailer that Treyarch has recently released, it’s glaringly obvious that this tradition of ‘bigger’ and ‘better’ maps and enemies is going to continue.

There was one aspect that really caught my eye from the aforementioned trailer – that aspect being the random tentacle monster which features towards the end of the video. That monster was unlike anything that has featured before in the Call of Duty Zombie Mode – in general the enemies were at least, at one point, human (or dogs). This thing, however, is more monster than man. In fact, there’s no man at all; it looks like something from the nightmares of Tim Burton. However, it’s not the monster itself that I want to talk about, it’s what the monster suggests for the game mode that I’m most interested in.

Classically, the mode has been all about the zombies – but this trailer seemed to pay extra attention to the monster, and its random flying offspring bug things. To me, that suggests that the monster will be playing a big part in the game. Maybe it’ll be a constant throughout the waves, perhaps based in a certain part of the map. Or perhaps the monster will jump in and out of the game every few waves – who knows. All I know is that it has a very Evolve feel to it. Each character has their own unique abilities, and it appears that they’ll be needing to utilise those abilities to tackle the monster.

In all, it seems as though Treyarch have really revitalised the game mode for Black Ops 3. Maybe that’s exactly what the mode needs; a breath of fresh air. Sure, I’m not the biggest fan of the 4v1 aspect in a COD Zombie Mode, but I definitely won’t knock it until I’ve tried it – plus, it worked incredibly well for Valve when they mixed in 4v1 elements with Left4Dead. The zombies are always going to be there, so maybe it’ll be interesting to have the distraction of the monster in there too. From what I can tell, the monster is all part of a bigger backstory, which should add a level of engagement to the game mode that us COD Zombie fans aren’t exactly used to. Plus, with the introduction of awesome actors like Jeff Goldblum, I’m sure that the game mode will, ummm, find a way to keep us entertained.

I’ll probably try the new zombie mode out, despite my hesitations towards the random monster they’ve added in. Maybe it’ll take more of a backseat… though I kind of doubt it. What do you think of the trailer? Are you excited for the new mode, or do you share my hesitance towards the creepy new monster?

No, they’re not trying to emulate Evolve. If you’ve done any research, you’d know that these new monsters are heavily inspired by Lovecraft’s work.
