There are some scenes in movies that you’ll never un-see. When Pvt. Mellish is stabbed by the German soldier in Saving Private Ryan. Or when Jim uses pushes his thumbs into the soldier’s eye sockets in 28 Days Later. With video-games, though, it’s a different experience. You’re often living the disturbing moments – which gives a far more intense emotion than just watching them. So I thought I’d write an article to celebrate that raw, empty, distraught or desolate feeling that video-games can give us.
Now, just as a precursor to the article, I’m not necessarily praising the fact that the games did what they did, or depicted what they depicted. In some cases, it isn’t necessary to go as far as some games go. Also, this contains spoilers – shock.
Eye needle – Dead Space 2
The NoonTech Diagnostic Machine, of Dead Space 2, was a real piece of work. It was designed to gather information around The Marker from survivors who had encountered it. In reality, it was a massive needle that entered the brain through the eye. The scene depicting its first use on Isaac in Dead Space 2, along with the fact that you control the whole thing, will haunt me for all of time. Particularly because I’m not a big fan of needles. Or things touching my eyes.
Mass murder in an airport – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
This is one of those moments that I wish I’d never played. I was given the option, and I knew what was coming, but for some reason I still went through with playing the scene. You’re playing as an undercover agent. So when you and your fellow team are told to mow innocent civilians down in an airport, that’s exactly what you have to do. Fail to take part and your cover will be blown – meaning you’ll have to do it all over again. It’s harrowing, particularly in light of recent atrocities and the current state of the world in general.
The death of Lee – Telltale’s The Walking Dead
From one morbid note to another. The scene in which (SPOILER) Lee dies is pretty damn harrowing. The whole time I was playing it, I kept thinking to myself “he’ll be fine though”. “Any minute now, they’ll realise that they can still save him”. “Aaaaany second now. Someone will come and help out”. “Oh, nope, I’m going to have to shoot Lee in the head. Great”. And I did. I shot him right in his gorgeous, slightly looking like he’s almost dead, face.
Torture for the sake of torture – Grant Theft Auto V
The torture scene from GTAV has been covered so many times. Some people are fine with it, others saw it as unnecessary. For me, my main objection was that it was integral to the story. In that, it wasn’t an optional ‘extra’. Either way, the scene itself was oddly uncomfortable. I say ‘oddly’, because it felt jovial at times. It probably should feel wrong, and bad. But, for some reason, it just feels odd – which is even more disconcerting.
Silent Hill 2 – Abstract Daddy
Silent Hill 2 is just a creepy game in general. In fairness, all of the Silent Hill games are creepy – they’ve got it down to a T. But one of the most unsettling scenes comes from the boss fight ‘Abstract Daddy’. The whole design of the boss fight alludes to themes of rape and molestation and it leaves you feeling distraught, upset and a little emotionally scarred.
As a special mention – the majority of Stick of Truth
The Stick of Truth is, in general, a disturbing video-game. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic game and I loved playing it. But it’s packed full of those “what the hell did I just see?”, moments. From an abortion mini-game to witnessing Randy being anal probed. OH and did I forget exploring Mr. Slave’s anal cavity?
And as a final special mention – disturbing Genital Jousting
You can probably get a lot about this game, just from its title. It’s based around male genitals, which have anuses. The aim of the game, in most of the game modes, is to insert your penis into another gamer’s anus. It’s harder than it sounds… no pun intended. There are various different game modes, from ‘Bukkake’ to ‘Lube Luge’. Each mode has its own disturbing features, from syringes being poked into your penis, to eating a sausage with your anus. But, the most disturbing aspect of all is the noise. The slithering, the slurping, the splatting – I’m not sure if I’ll ever un-hear those sounds.
